Delete a Telegram Account Permanently: The Honest Guide

Telegram has no temporary deactivation. The account either exists or it does not, and there are only two ways out. The first is the official page at my.telegram.org/delete, opened in a browser, which wipes the account within a minute. The second is the self-destruct timer, which closes the account after 1 to 18 months without a single login. Both are permanent. If you are leaving one channel to start another, seed the new one with Telegram followers before you announce it.

The only two ways to delete a Telegram account

Plenty of tutorials describe a magic in-app button. It is not there on every platform. As of September 2026, Telegram offers exactly two mechanisms, and they end in the same place.

The first is the deactivation page hosted on Telegram’s account domain. You open my.telegram.org/delete (the older telegram.org/deactivate address still redirects there), sign in with your phone number, and the account is gone within a minute.

The second is the inactivity timer in the app’s privacy settings. You pick a duration, and if you do not log in even once during that window, Telegram erases the account by itself.

On iPhone and on recent desktop clients there is a “Delete My Account” entry in settings, but it takes you to the same phone-number confirmation. On Android the menu mostly exposes the timer, so for an instant wipe the browser route stays the reliable one on any device.

There is no third path. Support will not close an account for you, and Telegram has never offered a dormant mode like the one Instagram has.

Method 1: delete it right now from your browser

Allow three minutes and keep your phone next to you: the confirmation code arrives inside the Telegram app, not by SMS.

1. Open my.telegram.org/delete in any browser, on mobile or desktop.
2. Enter your number in international format, with the country code and no spaces (for example +447700900123).
3. Pick up the code in the official “Telegram” chat inside your app. If you are logged out everywhere, nothing will arrive, so log back in first.
4. Paste the code and sign in to reach the deletion page.
5. Give a reason if the field appears, it is optional, then confirm with the delete button.

Once you confirm, the account is destroyed on Telegram’s servers. Every session logs out, your username is released back into the pool, and your cloud chats stop being readable. Nobody, support included, can undo it afterwards.

Method 2: the self-destruct timer

This option has existed since Telegram’s early days, and most users have no idea it is already running on their account. You will find it under Settings > Privacy and Security > Delete My Account If Away For.

The available windows run from 1 month to 18 months, with steps at 3, 6 and 12 months. The value applied by default is 18 months: if you never open the app for a year and a half, Telegram deletes the account without further warning.

Watch what “away” means here. It is not about writing less, it is about not signing in. One forgotten session on an old laptop or a desktop client you never close is enough to reset the counter. For the timer to do its job, log out of every active session from Settings > Devices.

This route suits anyone who is hesitating. You leave the door open for a month, and if you do not come back, everything goes. It is the closest thing Telegram has to a reversible deactivation.

What actually disappears, and what stays

This is the part most guides skip, and it is the part that matters if privacy is your reason for leaving.

Wiped: your profile, your photo, your username, your contact list, your private chats as you see them, the media stored in Telegram’s cloud, your secret chats and every session.

Still standing: messages you already sent stay in your recipients’ conversations. They show up under the “Deleted Account” label, but the text, the photos and the files are all still there. Deleting your account erases nothing retroactively on the other side.

Groups and channels you created are not closed. They keep running without an owner, and any admin you appointed keeps full rights. A channel with ten thousand members stays online after you leave, so if you want it gone, delete it manually before closing the account.

Copies made by other people, screenshots or forwarded messages, are obviously out of Telegram’s reach. Deletion resets your side of the ledger, not theirs. If the plan is a clean restart on a new channel, an opening batch of Telegram followers keeps you from launching to an empty room.

Deleting the app does not delete the account

Uninstalling Telegram removes a piece of software and nothing else. The account keeps living on the servers, your contacts still see you in their list, and messages sent to you pile up waiting. You remain reachable, still a member of your groups, still subscribed to your channels.

Worse, your “last seen” freezes at the date of your final login, which makes the account look dormant when it is perfectly alive. Reinstalling the app and typing the SMS code brings everything back untouched, cloud history included.

So if privacy is the goal, uninstalling is not enough. And if you only need a break, you can hide your number from search, hide your last seen and mute notifications without destroying anything.

I no longer have access to my phone number

This is the usual situation after moving abroad or switching carriers. The deletion page asks for a number, but the confirmation code arrives inside the app rather than by SMS. That detail changes everything.

If a session is still open somewhere, on an old handset, a tablet or Telegram Desktop, you already have the fix. Open that session, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Phone Number and swap the old number for one you control. From there you can delete the account normally, or simply set the inactivity timer to one month and log out everywhere.

If no session is open and the SIM is gone, the only realistic route is asking your carrier to reissue the same number on a new SIM. A recycled number now owned by a stranger is a dead end: Telegram will not hand an account to a third party on request.

As a last resort, Telegram’s support form does accept lost-account cases, but replies take weeks and often never come. Do not build your plan around it.

What to do before you press the button

Four steps prevent most regrets, and they take ten minutes.

1. Export your data. Telegram Desktop can export every chat and media file to HTML or JSON from its advanced settings. It is the only backup that exists, and it only works on a computer.
2. Transfer channel ownership. In a channel’s admin panel, the transfer option hands full rights to another member. Skip it and your channel is orphaned.
3. Warn the contacts who matter. Your old messages will not vanish on their side, but your profile turns into a “Deleted Account” with no explanation.
4. Move your two-factor codes. If Telegram receives login codes for other services, change the delivery method first, or you lose access to those accounts too.

One last question worth asking: do you want to disappear, or do you want to start over? A lot of creators delete an account because the channel stalled, when the real problem was visibility rather than identity. In that case, opening a fresh channel and giving it a credible base of Telegram followers costs less than a permanent exit.
