How to Delete a Twitter Account in 2026: the 30-Day Rule

X, the platform formerly called Twitter, has no delete button. You deactivate, and the account is wiped automatically after 30 days with no sign-in, a figure confirmed by the X Help Center in September 2026. During that month everything is reversible: one login, even an accidental one, brings the account straight back. Request your data archive before you start, because the request is blocked afterwards. And if you are leaving mainly because the account never grew, buying X (Twitter) followers costs less than starting over.

How long before the deletion is permanent?

Thirty days. That is the figure in force, stated in the “How to deactivate your X account” page of the Help Center, checked on 10 September 2026. The clock starts the second you confirm deactivation with your password. Once the window closes with no sign-in, X erases the profile, the posts, the direct messages and the follower list, and releases the username.

Two other numbers circulate and confuse everyone. The first goes back to November 2019, when Twitter announced it would remove accounts inactive for more than six months: the plan was cancelled in under twenty-four hours. The second comes from the inactive account policy, which has nothing to do with a voluntary deactivation. For your deletion, only the 30 days count.

The real trap is not the delay, it is the accidental sign-in. A third-party app still authorised, a password manager filling the form for you, a scheduling tool polling the account: any of them reopens the session and cancels the deletion without a word to you. The counter goes back to zero.

One more detail most guides skip: deactivating does not cancel a Premium subscription. Billing continues through X, the App Store or Google Play depending on where you signed up. Cancel it first, or you will keep paying for an account that no longer exists.

Deactivate, delete or go private: the table

Most people actually want to disappear from other people’s view, not erase ten years of posts. These are three very different operations.

If your problem is harassment, a professional reputation or plain fatigue, a protected account solves it without destroying anything. If you are going for good, know what survives anyway: other people’s replies quoting you, screenshots, external archives and the search engine cache.

Download your data before you go

This is the step you cannot redo. Once deactivation starts, the archive request stops working and your content leaves with the account.

1. Open Settings and privacy, then Your account.
2. Choose Download an archive of your data.
3. Confirm your password, then the code sent by email or text.
4. Tap Request archive and wait for the notification, usually a few hours, sometimes up to twenty-four.
5. Download the zip file from the same screen within the following days, before the link expires.

The archive holds your posts, direct messages, media, follower list and advertising data, as HTML files you can open in a browser and JSON files you can process. Open it and check the contents before going further: this is the last moment when a mistake is still fixable.

How to delete your X account step by step

The process is the same on iPhone, Android and browser, only the menu path changes. Do the housekeeping first, it prevents nasty surprises.

1. Revoke connected apps in Settings, Security and account access, Apps and sessions. They are the number one cause of accidental reactivation.
2. Cancel Premium wherever you subscribed, and check that no payment is scheduled.
3. Free up your email and phone number if you plan to reuse them on another account: swap in a secondary address before you leave.
4. On mobile: profile picture, Settings and Support, Settings and privacy, Your account, Deactivate your account.
5. On the web: More menu, Settings and privacy, Your account, Deactivate your account.
6. Read the warning screen, enter your password and confirm with Deactivate.
7. Sign out everywhere, delete the app and remove x.com from your password manager and browser autofill.

Put the date in your calendar. On day thirty, try opening your old profile in a private window: an error page means the deletion went through.

What happens to your username

During the thirty-day deactivation your @ is held and nobody can take it. Once deletion is final it goes back into the pool. That return is neither instant nor announced: a handle can stay unavailable for weeks before it shows up again.

Since the Handle Marketplace launched in late October 2025, dormant handles even have a price tag. Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers can request so-called priority handles for free, usually full names or multi-word phrases, while rare handles are listed anywhere from a few thousand dollars to seven figures. In other words, a short clean handle you abandon is not going to sit politely waiting for you.

If the name matters to you, the move is simple: create a second account, rename the old one with a throwaway handle, assign the freed handle to the new account immediately, then delete the old one. You keep the identity and lose only the history.

Deleting your tweets without deleting the account

This is often the real request hiding behind deletion: getting rid of old, awkward or outdated posts while keeping the handle and the followers. X still offers no native bulk delete. You can remove posts one by one, which is fine below two hundred and absurd above that.

Past that point you need a third-party service connected to your account: TweetDelete, TweetEraser, Circleboom and Redact are among the most used, with subscriptions running from ten to thirty dollars a month since API access became paid. The public interface only returns your latest 3,200 posts; to go deeper, these services ask you to import the archive you downloaded earlier. Open-source scripts such as TweetXer do the same job without a subscription, in exchange for a little setup.

Two precautions are worth the effort. Never type your password into one of these tools: the connection must go through the official authorisation flow, and you revoke that access in Apps and sessions as soon as the cleanup is done.

Deleting an account you can no longer access

No login, no deactivation. So you either recover access first or go through a support form. The common cases break down like this.

• Forgotten password: standard reset by email or text from the login screen.
• No access to the email or phone number: the Help Center login issue form, with the exact handle and as much proof of ownership as you can gather.
• Lost two-factor authentication: the backup code generated when you turned it on is the only fast route; without it, support is the way.
• Hacked account: the dedicated compromised account form, which resets sessions and forces a password change.
• Fake profile using your name: that is not a deletion but an impersonation report, with ID attached.
• Account of someone who died: X has documented a process for family members, with supporting documents, since late 2025.

Residents of the European Union and the United Kingdom have one extra lever: an erasure request under data protection law, filed through the X privacy portal. It is slower than a deactivation, but it covers personal data even when the account is out of reach. California residents can use the equivalent CCPA request.

Leave for good, or restart the account

A good share of deletions have nothing to do with privacy. People delete because nothing takes off, because forty followers after a year feels like talking to an empty room. Before erasing, price the rebuild: a new account starts with no history and no age, which is exactly what the algorithm looks at first.

In that specific case, clearing out the old posts, tightening the profile and building a credible follower base beats scorched earth.
