Is TikTok Shop Legit and Safe? Scams, Refunds and Real Risks

Yes, TikTok Shop is legit: it is TikTok’s official in-app store, with built-in checkout and, in the EU, 30 days to send an item back. The risk comes from individual sellers, not from the app. In July 2025, the UK consumer group Which? found that 5 of the 6 branded cosmetics it bought there were probably fake. Below: what actually protects you, the common scams, a checklist before you pay and what to do when an order goes wrong. And if you sell through your videos, a base of TikTok followers makes a real difference.

Is TikTok Shop legit or a scam?

The platform is not a scam. TikTok Shop belongs to ByteDance, like TikTok itself, and works as a marketplace: third-party sellers list products, creators show them in videos or lives, and you pay without leaving the app. TikTok takes the payment, keeps a commission and settles disputes.

So reliability depends mostly on the seller. Next to brands like Carrefour, L’Oréal, Nivea or Philips, named by TikTok in its May 28, 2026 announcement, you will find shops that opened yesterday and sell counterfeits. Public reviews show the gap: on Trustpilot, the shop.tiktok.com page scores 1.2 out of 5 in September 2026 across 699 reviews, 93% of them one star. Most complaints are about customer service, slow refunds and products that don’t match the photos.

My take: buying a known brand from its official store is no riskier than anywhere else. Buying a “branded” product at less than half price from an unknown seller is a different story.

Which countries have TikTok Shop?

TikTok Shop opened in waves and is not available everywhere:

1. United Kingdom in 2021, the first European market, followed by the United States.
2. Spain and Ireland on December 10, 2024.
3. France, Germany and Italy on March 31, 2025.
4. Brazil on May 8, 2025, with payment by Pix, card or boleto.
5. Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland on June 15, 2026, bringing Europe to ten countries.

According to TikTok, more than 100,000 European businesses have joined since late 2024. Portugal and Switzerland are still not open. A “TikTok store” offering to sell to you from a country where the service doesn’t exist deserves all your suspicion.

What protects you when you buy?

TikTok Shop’s EU return policy, updated on September 8, 2026, goes further than the 14-day legal minimum:

• 30 days to change your mind from the day you receive the item, to cancel or return it.
• Return shipping paid by the seller if the product is faulty or not as described. For a simple change of mind, TikTok Shop and the seller share the cost.
• Automatic refund if the seller does nothing within 2 days of receiving the returned parcel, or 14 days after your return tracking becomes available.
• Damaged or wrong item: repair, replacement or full refund, and the buyer chooses.

Some categories can’t be returned for a change of mind: personalized items, unsealed hygiene products, perishables, opened software, newspapers. The UK and US have their own policies, so check the one for your country. Payment goes through third-party providers and the seller never sees your card details.

All of this disappears the moment you pay outside the app.

What are the most common TikTok Shop scams?

Four patterns keep coming up in investigations and buyer stories:

1. Counterfeits. In an investigation published on July 24, 2025, Which? bought 34 cosmetics from big brands (CeraVe, Charlotte Tilbury, La Roche-Posay, The Ordinary) on four platforms. On TikTok Shop, 5 of 6 products were probably fake, against 4 of 11 on Amazon. TikTok replied that it had blocked more than 7 million violating listings between July and December 2024.
2. Fake TikTok Shop websites. On August 11, 2026, Malwarebytes described sites that copy the layout and the “trusted seller” badges, sometimes adding a loan offer, only to harvest card details.
3. Off-app payment. A seller messages you with a better price by bank transfer or through an outside link. You lose every protection.
4. The miracle product on live. A countdown, stock “almost gone”, a demo that looks too good. What arrives often has little to do with it.

Why is TikTok Shop so cheap?

A low price isn’t always a red flag. There are legitimate reasons behind it:

• TikTok funds coupons and free shipping to win first-time buyers, especially in newly opened countries.
• At launch in France, Germany and Italy, seller commissions were reported to be low, a few percent according to the trade press, which leaves room to cut prices.
• Many sellers are manufacturers or wholesalers selling direct, often from China, with longer delivery times.

The line is easy to remember. An unbranded accessory for 8 dollars is plausible. A big-brand serum at 60% off from a seller with no history is exactly the profile of the fakes Which? found.

How to buy on TikTok Shop without getting scammed

Before you confirm an order, spend two minutes on these checks:

1. Open the shop from inside the app, never from a link you got by message or email.
2. Look at the seller’s rating, number of sales and how long the shop has existed.
3. Read reviews with photos, and be wary of short, identical reviews posted on the same day.
4. For a known brand, look for the brand’s official store or a reseller you trust.
5. Compare the price with the brand’s own site: past a 50% gap, walk away.
6. Check the shipping country and the announced delivery time.
7. Film the unboxing of valuable parcels. It’s your proof if there’s a dispute.

For payment, a credit card is safer than a bank transfer: your bank can dispute the charge if the parcel never shows up.

What to do if your order goes wrong

1. In the app, go to your profile, then Orders, pick the item and choose Return/refund.
2. Give the exact reason (not received, damaged, not as described, counterfeit) and attach photos and your unboxing video.
3. The seller has 2 working days to answer. If they don’t, TikTok Shop handles the request.
4. Send the parcel back with the label provided and keep the tracking number.
5. If the refusal looks unfair, ask TikTok Shop to step in from the order page.
6. As a last resort, contact your bank for a chargeback and report the seller to your national consumer authority.

What if you sell or do affiliate marketing?

For creators, TikTok Shop is mostly an affiliate income stream: you pin a product in your video and earn a commission on each sale. Trust works both ways here. A creator who pushes a counterfeit loses credibility, and sometimes access to the program.

Pick well-rated sellers, test the product before talking about it, and actually show it. To help a product video find its audience in the first hours, a push in TikTok views can get it past the first distribution threshold.
