How to Recover a TikTok Account: the 4 Real Routes

There is no single procedure, there are four, and picking the wrong one costs you weeks. An account deleted less than 30 days ago comes back by logging in again. A lost password goes through “Forgot password?”, then Recover account if your device is not recognised. A suspended account only comes back through the in-app appeal, never through the web form. A hacked account is won or lost in the first few hours. Here is the exact path for each case, checked on 10 September 2026. If your account is healthy but flat, look at TikTok followers instead.

Which case are you in?

Almost every guide blends the four situations into one list of steps, and people end up filing a hacking report over a forgotten password. Start by reading what the app actually shows you.

A fifth case never shows up at the login screen: after 180 days of inactivity, TikTok may reset your username to a randomised numeric one. The account and the videos stay intact, but the @ does not come back.

Deleted less than 30 days ago

The simplest case, and the worst explained. Deletion does not run immediately: the account sits deactivated for 30 days, then it is erased. During that window, log in with the same credentials and tap Reactivate. Profile, videos, followers and messages all return, and the deletion request is cancelled.

After 30 days nobody brings the account back. Do not confuse this with plain deactivation, which has no countdown at all: your data is kept and you reactivate whenever you want.

Password, email or phone number gone

The account is fine, you are the one locked out. The official path:

1. Tap Sign up, then Log in at the bottom.
2. Choose Use phone / email / username, then Email / Username.
3. Tap Forgot password? and reset by phone number or email.

If you signed up with Google, Apple or Facebook, TikTok never held a password to give you back: the reset happens on that platform. And changing your password logs out every other session, which quietly solves a share of hacking cases.

The “unrecognized device” message stops a lot of people. It shows up when 2-step verification is on and you try to reset from a device you have never logged in from. Without that protection, anyone with access to your inbox would take the account in two minutes. Two ways out: go back to a device you have used before, or tap Recover account under Forgot password?, where TikTok asks for your registered email, your phone number or previous passwords. Lost your authenticator app? The recovery code issued at setup exists for exactly this, and without it identity checks can take up to 30 days.

Recovery through friends

Barely any guide mentions it, and TikTok documents it in plain text. When a password reset gets you nowhere, your contacts can let you back in.

1. Open the app and tap the Help button at the top.
2. Tap Recover your account.
3. Enter your username or the email linked to the account, then tap Search. Search by phone number works if a number was linked.
4. Tap Can’t access these? at the bottom, then Ask friends to verify.
5. Tap Start, then Share to send the instructions to your friends.

The conditions weigh as much as the path. You need at least two friends, they get the request on the Security & permissions page of their own settings rather than as a normal notification, the response window is limited and the number of requests per day is capped. Warning both people in advance stops you burning an attempt.

Suspended or banned account

Read what TikTok is holding against you first, in the screen once called “account status” and now named Account check: Profile, Menu ☰, TikTok Studio, More tools. Five restrictions appear separately there, including login, posting and direct messages.

The system counts by category. The first removal gives you a warning, later ones give strikes counted per policy area or per feature, and hitting the threshold means a permanent ban. Strikes expire after 90 days, and deleting the offending video erases none of them.

The appeal is filed in the app, by a different path depending on whether you are logged in.

1. Logged in: Profile, Menu ☰, Settings and privacy, Report a problem, Account and profile, Login, then Suspended account.
2. Logged out: Profile tab, the Help (?) icon, then Suspended account.
3. In the pop-up, tap Appeal and attach any documents requested.

And now the opposite of what tutorials claim: the web form does contain a “Banned account” category, but it opens no fields at all. It prints the path above and sends you back to the app, checked on 10 September 2026.

A banned account stays reachable by login, precisely so you can file the appeal and download your data, until personal data deletion makes it disappear for good, so time works against you. An accepted appeal restores the account and removes the strike, unless you deleted the account or the content in the meantime. And creating a new account to get around a severe ban counts as another violation. Quote the exact rule shown in your notification, especially since the Community Guidelines change on 24 September 2026.

Hacked account

TikTok lists the signs itself: password or phone number changed, username changed, videos deleted or posted without you, messages sent from your account. The order of your moves decides everything.

1. Dig through your inbox. TikTok emails you whenever the address or number changes, and that message carries a cancellation link valid for a few days. The fastest route, and the one nearly everyone misses.
2. Try logging in with Google, Apple or Facebook if one was linked: plenty of attackers change the password without cutting those routes.
3. Change the password if you are still logged in somewhere: every other session drops at once.
4. Link a phone number under Account, Account Information.
5. Remove unknown devices in Security & permissions, Manage devices.
6. If everything is locked, file the web form, Hacked account category: it asks whether you own the account, your username, a contact email, your account of events, and up to ten attachments.

Never create a fresh account on the same phone number while the case is open: you detach that number from the stolen account and make ownership harder to prove.

The web form

The form at tiktok.com/legal/report/feedback works without being logged in, so it works with a locked account. Pick the topic Account access / security, then your category: login issue and account recovery, banned account, hacked account, request to delete account, a deceased person’s account, or Other.

The Login issue & account recovery category asks for details nobody can find in a panic. Gather them before you open the page:

• The exact username, the one starting with an @.
• The sign up date and sign up region, approximate is fine.
• The registration method: phone, email, Google, Apple, Facebook.
• The device used to log in, model included.
• A contact email you can genuinely read.
• Screenshots, ten at most.

How long it takes

TikTok publishes no service level except on one point. The realistic ranges, with the official figure marked apart from field reports:

• Reactivating a deleted account: instant, within the 30 days.
• Password reset: minutes, or one to several days if you go through Recover account.
• Friends verification: a few hours.
• Authentication reset without a recovery code: up to 30 days, TikTok’s own figure.
• Ban appeal: 24 hours to 7 days per field reports, often 2 to 5.
• Hacked account via the form: 5 to 15 business days per field reports.

One appeal per enforcement action in most cases, so nothing goes out in a hurry. Progress is tracked in the in-app Safety Center, not in your inbox.

Fake unban services

A lost account makes people gullible, and half the search results in Spanish and Portuguese are paid recovery pages.

• The account fixer. Guaranteed unban in 24 hours for 50 to 300 euros. They fill in the same public form you would, or leave with the credentials you handed over.
• The fake support agent. An account or email poses as TikTok support and asks for your password or your SMS code. No agent ever does that.
• The fake warning. A message announces a ban within 24 hours for copyright infringement, with a login link that harvests your password.

Secure it, then restart it

Taking back control fits on one screen: Settings and privacy, Security & permissions, Security checkup. TikTok gathers there everything that makes a second loss unlikely: link and verify a phone number and an email, turn on 2-step verification, manage trusted devices, add a passkey. Two contact channels beat one, because if one falls the other lets you back in without a form.

Then comes the aftermath. An account returning from three weeks away drops out of the feed, and everything rides on the first few posts, the ones nobody watches if the profile looks abandoned. A boost of TikTok views on the two or three restart videos gives them the social signal that gets them watched to the end, and watch time is what decides the rest.
