How to Change Your Name on TikTok: Both Fields Explained

TikTok gives your account two separate names, and they follow different rules. The display name, called nickname in the help centre, takes up to 30 characters and can be changed once every 7 days. Display name and username: two fields, two rules

This is where the confusion starts, and it explains most of the “TikTok won’t let me change my name” posts. Your account carries two labels, Name and Username.

• The display name is what people read under your videos, on the For You feed, in comments and in direct messages. It does not have to be unique. Up to 30 characters, emoji included, and one change every 7 days.
• The username is the unique @handle people use to tag you and find you, and it builds your profile address, as in tiktok.com/@yourhandle. Between 2 and 24 characters, letters, numbers, underscores and periods only, and never a period at the end. One change every 30 days.

The practical consequence: changing the display name touches nothing else, while changing the username moves your profile address. That is why the two waiting times differ.

How do you change your display name on TikTok?

This is the quick one, and the one most people actually need.

1. Open the app and tap Profile at the bottom right.
2. Tap Edit profile.
3. Tap the Name row.
4. Type your new name, 30 characters maximum, and keep it within the Community Guidelines.
5. Tap Save.

Your profile updates straight away, then comments and messages catch up within minutes. Your profile address stays put, and so do your followers.

How do you change your @username?

Same screen, the row below, much heavier consequences.

1. Tap Profile, then Edit profile.
2. Tap Username and type the handle you want.
3. Tap Save.

The five points TikTok prints on that page are worth reading before you confirm:

• One change every 30 days, and not one more.
• If you give up your username, you cannot add it to an account for a short period.
• The change also rewrites your profile link.
• A taken handle is refused, even one held by a suspended or deactivated account.
• Nothing goes through if you are blocked from updating your profile.

Can you do it from a computer?

Yes, and the help centre documents that path separately.

1. Go to tiktok.com and sign in.
2. Click your profile picture in the top corner, then View profile.
3. Click Edit profile.
4. Click Name or Username, type, save.

An amusing detail, checked on 10 September 2026: the help page that holds this procedure is titled “Unable to change username”. It repeats the same 30 days and the same 30-character cap. The counters are identical on both surfaces, because TikTok keeps them, not your phone.

What are the real waiting times?

Blogs repeat contradictory numbers and cite nothing. Two help articles settle it: 7 days for the display name, 30 days for the username. No other cooldown exists, not for the photo, not for the bio.

Then there is the most copied trick on the web, rolling your phone’s date back to fool the counter. It worked a few years ago, it does not any more, and German and Spanish tutorials from 2026 say so plainly. The date of your last change lives on TikTok’s servers, and your phone only displays the refusal.

What does work while you wait: edit the display name, which only carries a 7-day lock and is what most people read before your @.

What happens to your old handle?

Both pieces of advice going around are wrong. One says the old handle is free again instantly, the other tells you to park it on a spare account right away. TikTok says something else: when you give up a username, you cannot add it to an account for a short period.

In practice:

• Mistype one letter and you will not get your old handle back within the minute.
• Putting it on a second account to protect it also fails during that freeze, and that is the advice you will read everywhere.
• Once the freeze ends, the handle returns to the pool and anyone can claim it.

For a brand, the only serious protection is to create the account under the wanted handle before releasing the old one, not after.

What breaks in your links and mentions?

Everyone writes that “your profile link changes” without saying what that does to links already published. We tested both cases on TikTok on 10 September 2026.

Links to your profile die. An address like tiktok.com/@oldhandle answers technically, then displays “Couldn’t find this account”. No redirect was ever put in place. So these all need redoing: the link in your Instagram or YouTube bio, your link page, your website, your email signature, printed QR codes, and any article that quoted your profile.

Links to your videos survive. We put a handle that does not exist in front of a real video number: the browser landed on the right video and the address was rewritten with the current handle. TikTok recognises a video by its number, not by the @ in front of it. Videos shared in messages, embeds on websites and press citations keep working.

Mentions already published go silent. An old @ typed in someone else’s caption or comment stays visible, but it leads to a page that no longer exists, and nobody will fix it for you.

What does not move: your followers, your videos, your likes, your messages and your drafts. No penalty and no reset of your reach come with a rename, whatever the legend says. The only real risk is recognition, so announce the change in a video and keep the other field stable for a few weeks.

Why does TikTok refuse your new name?

The in-app error messages are short, the causes are known.

• The lock is still on. 30 days since your last username, 7 days since your last display name.
• The handle is taken. Including by a suspended or deactivated account, and it does not necessarily free up right away.
• The format is refused. Fewer than 2 or more than 24 characters, a space, an accent, a trailing period.
• Your profile is blocked from updating. That is a penalty: open Account status in the Safety Centre and appeal if it is undeserved.
• Your account is verified. TikTok asks you to go through support, to keep the badge consistent with the verified identity.

If the refusal is generic, drop the virtual private network, switch back to Wi-Fi and update the app. Profile changes are a sensitive area on the security side, and a login coming out of an unusual country is enough to get them blocked.

How do you pick a name people can find?

A good name is typed from memory and shows up in search.

1. Keep the two fields close. A display name and an @ that nearly match halve the odds of someone searching in the wrong place.
2. Put in a word people type. TikTok search reads the display name, so your city, your job or your topic pays more than three emoji.
3. Claim the same @ elsewhere. Instagram, YouTube, X: consistency beats a pun.

One last point: a long @ gets copied badly in comments. Once the new name is set, reach is the real question again, and TikTok views on your first posts decide it, not the spelling of your handle.
