How to Delete a TikTok Account in 2026: the 30-Day Rule

As of September 2026 the path is Profile, Menu ☰, Settings and privacy, Account, Deactivate or delete account. Deletion is never instant: the account sits deactivated for 30 days, and a single log-in cancels the whole thing. Download your data before you start, cash out your Diamonds, and remember that a linked shop closes separately. If you are leaving mainly because nothing was taking off, a boost of TikTok followers costs less than starting over.

The exact path, step by step

Half the guides online still describe a “Manage account” menu that no longer exists. Here is the path that is actually in place, checked against the TikTok Help Center on 10 September 2026.

1. Open the app and tap Profile at the bottom.
2. Tap the Menu ☰ button at the top.
3. Tap Settings and privacy.
4. Tap Account, then Deactivate or delete account.
5. Choose Delete account permanently. TikTok asks why you are leaving: answer, or tap Skip.
6. The next screen offers to download your data. Say yes, because this is your last chance and the file takes days to prepare.
7. Confirm your identity with the code sent by text or email, then tap Delete.

On a computer the procedure exists too: click your avatar, open Settings, find the account control section, click Delete, verify your identity and confirm. Deactivation, on the other hand, is not offered on the website at all. That one needs the mobile app.

One trap catches a lot of people: uninstalling the app deletes nothing. The profile stays public, the videos stay online, and the account keeps showing up in search.

How long before deletion is permanent?

Thirty days. The account is deactivated the moment you confirm, then wiped automatically after thirty days with no log-in. Log back in before that and the request is cancelled: profile, videos, followers and messages all come back.

There is a catch: that figure is no longer in TikTok’s Help Center. The official article is down to four steps, and archived copies show it has carried no timeframe since late 2024. The thirty days come from the confirmation screen inside the app. The rule holds, but it is not published any more, so write down the date you filed your request.

Do not confuse this with the Inactive Account Policy, which talks about 180 days. That one does not delete anything. It only resets the username to a randomised numeric one. Two different mechanisms, two different numbers.

Deactivate, delete or just go private

Plenty of people actually want to disappear from other people’s feeds, not erase three years of videos. TikTok now offers three very different exits.

Deactivation is the most useful thing TikTok has added recently, because there is no countdown attached. TikTok simply says you can lift it whenever you are ready. Every platform handles this differently, and the numbers do not transfer: on X (Twitter) the wait is also 30 days, while on Telegram there is no grace period at all once deletion starts.

Download your data before you leave

This is the step you cannot go back for, and the file takes days to prepare. Start it before you even think about deleting.

1. Profile, Menu ☰, Settings and privacy, then Account.
2. Tap Download your data.
3. Pick which categories to include and a file format.
4. Tap Request data and wait for the in-app notification. A few days is normal.
5. Come back to the same screen, open the Download data tab and grab the file. It stays available for four days.

Two limits worth knowing. The last 24 to 48 hours of activity are not always included, so save yesterday’s video by hand as well. And some data is never exportable, particularly anything that touches other people’s privacy. In the European Economic Area and the UK you also have a direct transfer right: TikTok can hand your posts, activity and direct messages to another service, either once or on an ongoing basis.

What gets erased and what stays online

Deletion removes the account, published videos, unsaved drafts, your follower list and your history. It does not remove anything that already left your phone, and this is where most guides stop too early.

• Videos other people already downloaded stay with them. TikTok says so plainly on its downloads page: a file saved while the setting was on stays on that person’s device even after you turn the setting off. Deleting an account does not go looking for those copies.
• Duets and Stitches made with your videos can stay visible. TikTok states this for deactivation, and the logic is identical: the video belongs to whoever made it too.
• Direct messages you sent stay readable in your recipients’ inboxes.
• Reposts, screen recordings, re-uploads and search engine caches are all outside the process.

If your real goal is to make one specific video disappear rather than the whole account, delete it first, and switch the download setting off today to limit fresh copies.

Diamonds, Gifts and Coins: what you lose

Almost nobody checks this before leaving, and it is real money. TikTok’s Virtual Items Policy is blunt about it: all Coins, Gifts and Diamonds in an account are cancelled immediately when the account is closed, with no refund for anything unused or unredeemed.

What that means in practice. If you have earned Diamonds from LIVE Gifts, withdraw them before you touch anything else: Profile, Menu ☰, Balance, then LIVE rewards. Withdrawals have daily limits and TikTok guarantees no processing time, so allow yourself room. Coins you bought simply expire when the account closes, with no refund.

When the account is linked to a shop

A TikTok Shop seller account is not the app account, even though the two are linked. Deleting the second does not close the first, and the reverse holds as well: your shop, your open orders, your returns and your payouts all carry on independently.

Closing a shop is a separate request, filed from the dedicated page in Seller Center, and it comes with conditions of its own: TikTok Shop asks sellers to announce the closure publicly before it goes through. So settle open orders, disputes and any balance owed to you before you touch the app account. And if all you did was link a TikTok account to a business account, the right move is to unlink them, not to delete anything.

What happens to your username

Contrary to what you read everywhere, a TikTok handle does not drop back into a pool where anyone can claim it. TikTok states that in most instances it cannot reassign a username, and tells people to add a number or an underscore instead of hoping to inherit somebody else’s.

Only one mechanism frees a handle: the Inactive Account Policy. After 180 days without a log-in, a username may be reset to a randomised numeric one. It can also be reset on a valid request, a trademark complaint for instance.

If you care about your @, do this before deleting: create a second account, rename the old one to a throwaway handle, assign the freed username to the new account straight away, then delete the old one.

Deleting an account you can no longer access

No log-in, no button. So you either recover access or go through a form. The common cases break down like this.

• Forgotten password: the standard reset from the log-in screen, by email or text.
• No access to either the email or the phone number: use TikTok’s “Report a problem” form, topic Account access / security, then the account deletion option. A human reviews the ticket, so have proof of ownership ready.
• Hacked account: change the password, link a phone number, then remove unknown devices under Security and permissions, Manage devices. Only then delete.
• EU residents: an erasure request under the GDPR still works without account access, through TikTok’s privacy reporting portal.
• Account of someone who has died: TikTok memorialises or deletes an account on request from a family member, with proof of death and proof that the person owned the account. Since legacy contacts arrived, the person you nominated can also request deletion if you gave them that permission.

Leave, or restart the account instead

A good share of deletions have nothing to do with privacy. People delete because nothing takes off, because three hundred views a video after a year feels like talking to an empty room. Before you erase, price up the rebuild: a fresh account starts with no history, no age and no social proof at all.

In that specific case, clearing out the old videos, tightening the profile and laying down a base of credible followers beats a clean slate.
