Who is Moo Deng?

Moo Deng was born on July 10, 2024, at Khao Kheow Open Zoo in Chonburi province, about 100 kilometers southeast of Bangkok. Her mother is Jona. The zoo let the public choose her name: more than 20,000 votes, and on August 20, 2024, “Moo Deng” won. In Thai it means roughly “bouncy pork”, a pork meatball dish. Her siblings are called Moo Tun (“stewed pork”) and Moo Wan (“sweet pork”). The zoo clearly likes its food.

Why did Moo Deng go viral?

It all started with photos and videos her keeper, Atthapon Nundee, posted on the zoo’s accounts. They showed a baby hippo biting knees, sliding on tiles, screaming when hosed down, and nearly always looking furious or close to tears. In September 2024, people turned those images into drawings, stickers and makeup looks. On X, she became the face of Monday morning.

The mechanism is simple. Moo Deng shows what a lot of people feel and don’t say: tired, annoyed, wanting to be left alone. An official song in four languages followed in November 2024, then a spot in Google’s year-end Doodle in December. In six months, Moo Deng went from a Thai enclosure to full internet character status.

What did fame change for the zoo?

A lot of money, first. According to Khaosod English (July 10, 2026), the zoo’s revenue was about 180 million baht in fiscal 2024. It rose to 319 million in fiscal 2025, the year Moo Deng’s popularity peaked. The zoo also registered “Moo Deng” as a trademark to sell plush toys, T-shirts and merchandise.

Fame had a downside too. As early as September 2024, videos showed visitors splashing Moo Deng or throwing things at her to wake her up. The director threatened legal action and installed cameras. PETA said she faced “a lifetime of confinement”, which the Thai Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals disputed.

2026 also brought some alarms. On February 16, conservationist Siranudh Scott posted photos of the enclosure, which he called “sad”. The zoo replied that feces in the water are natural territorial marking and are cleaned every morning. On March 18, a man got into the enclosure for a couple of minutes without touching the animals. He was arrested for trespassing, and Moo Deng and her mother were unharmed, NBC News reported.
