Je survivrai by Régine: the Bref 2 Song That Went Viral

⏱️ Read time: 7 minutes

The song from French series “Bref 2” that sent streams through the roof is “Je survivrai” by Régine, the 1979 French version of “I Will Survive”. In the first episode it plays under the line “He needed to sit down for 30 seconds, he sat for 20 years”. After the season landed on Disney+ on 14 February 2025, streams jumped 1,000% on Spotify and 10,900% on Deezer in France. Here is the story, the numbers, and what this revival teaches artists who want to grow their Apple Music streams and keep their tracks alive on the platforms.

Where does Régine’s “Je survivrai” come from?

It all starts with “I Will Survive”, Gloria Gaynor’s disco hit released in late 1978. The following year, Régine recorded a French version, “Je survivrai”. France’s national audiovisual archive, the INA, dug out a 1979 clip of her performing it on the TV show “Top club”.

Régine was not primarily a hitmaker. Nicknamed “the queen of the night”, she left her mark on Paris through her nightclubs, before and during her singing career. She died in May 2022, aged 92.

The song had already had a second life in France: in 1998, the Hermes House Band’s English cover of “I Will Survive” became the anthem of the French football team during their World Cup, the INA notes. Régine’s version, though, had been sleeping in the catalogues for decades. French public radio station France Musique told its story on video in March 2025:

Which scene of Bref 2 uses the song?

“Bref”, created by Kyan Khojandi, was a hit on French channel Canal+ in 2011 and 2012 with episodes under two minutes long. Season 2, co-written with Bruno Muschio, came out on Disney+ on 14 February 2025: six episodes of 30 to 40 minutes.

“Je survivrai” comes in during the first episode, over a passage that spread widely. The narrator says: “Il avait besoin de s’asseoir 30 secondes, il s’est assis 20 ans” (“He needed to sit down for 30 seconds, he sat for 20 years”). The line is about time slipping by unnoticed, about life put on pause “just for a moment” and never restarted. Paired with a song that shouts “I will survive”, it hit a generation of people in their thirties and forties.

Disney+ France posted the clip on TikTok on 19 February 2025:

French magazine Télérama summed up the public’s reaction on the same platform a few weeks later: “This line in Bref 2 got a big reaction from you; from us too.”

How many streams did the song gain?

The figures published on 26 February 2025, twelve days after release, speak for themselves:

  • Spotify: streams up 1,000%, according to the report carried by Yahoo News France.
  • Spotify Viral chart, France: number 1 according to French station MRadio, number 2 in the Viral 50 according to other reports published the same day.
  • Deezer: streams up 10,900% in France.

A 10,900% rise is huge, but it needs reading correctly. It starts from a very low base: a 1979 track that few people were still playing. Giant percentages are typical of these revivals. What matters is the presence in viral charts, which measure how fast a song is shared more than raw volume.

The effect also showed on TikTok, where thousands of videos reused the line over “Je survivrai”. That trip through social media, more than the show alone, is what sent people to play the full song.

Why can a TV series revive an old hit?

“Bref 2” is not an isolated case. In 2022, Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill”, released in 1985, went back to number one in the UK after being used in season 4 of “Stranger Things”. In 2020, Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” climbed the charts again thanks to a viral TikTok of a man skateboarding while drinking cranberry juice.

The mechanism repeats. A strong scene ties the song to a specific emotion. Viewers look up the track, share it on TikTok or Instagram, and every video sparks more curiosity. Streaming platforms, where the whole catalogue is one tap away, turn that curiosity into instant plays. Recommendation algorithms do the rest: a track that rises fast gets into editorial and viral playlists, which expose it even more.

In Régine’s case, the narrator’s line was the hook. Without it, the song would have been one good soundtrack choice among many.

What has happened since, in 2026?

The series travelled beyond France. Disney+ made it available in Switzerland, Portugal and Canada from 26 February 2025, then in the UK, the US, Australia and a dozen other countries on 26 March 2025. On the French film site AlloCiné it reached 4.8 out of 5, with 93% of “excellent” ratings in its members’ club, a record for the site.

On 4 May 2026, “Bref 2” aired free-to-air on TF1, about fifteen months after Disney+. And for anyone waiting for more: in May 2026 Kyan Khojandi said there was no script for a season 3, “for now, no”. He says he lives “at the tempo of life”, not “at the pace of opportunities”.

As for “Je survivrai”, the February 2025 peak is over, but the song is still tied to the show in searches and in “Bref music” playlists.

What artists can take from it

Not everyone gets a track into a Disney+ series. But the “Je survivrai” pattern holds a few useful lessons for an artist or label:

  1. Be findable everywhere: the song was on every platform the day people searched for it. A track missing from Spotify, Deezer or Apple Music loses the momentum.
  2. Have an official TikTok sound: videos that reuse a clip point back to the full track. A well-named sound (artist + title) captures that traffic.
  3. Isolate the key moment: here, a line and a chorus. For an artist, it is often 15 seconds worth pushing as a clip.
  4. Move fast: Régine’s figures came out twelve days after release. After a few weeks, attention fades.
  5. Look after the early numbers: viral charts and playlists watch the speed of a start. A track that opens with plays and TikTok views on its clip has a better chance of being noticed.
