To share a link on Instagram, you have three places where it actually becomes clickable: your bio (up to five links), a story with the Link sticker, and direct messages. In a post caption or a comment, a URL is dead text, except for a small group of Meta Verified subscribers who have been testing caption links since March 2026. This guide gives the exact path for each option, explains why the sticker sometimes goes missing, and shows how to get people to tap once the link is up. A link needs an audience, and Instagram likes on the story or post that announces it help it get seen.

Where is a link actually clickable on Instagram?
Half the tutorials ranking for this search were written before 2022. They still talk about the “swipe up” reserved for accounts with 10,000 followers and about IGTV, which no longer exists. Here is where things stand in September 2026.
| Placement | Clickable? | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| Profile bio | Yes, up to 5 links | Every account, private ones included |
| Story (Link sticker) | Yes, for 24 hours | Everyone except new or penalized accounts |
| Direct message | Yes | Everyone |
| Post caption | No, except a paid test | Some Meta Verified subscribers, 10 links a month |
| Comment | No | Nobody |
| Reel | Only to another Reel or an Instagram account | Everyone |
Meta’s logic is easy to follow: an outbound link takes people out of the app, so Instagram allows it where it costs the least attention.
How do you add a link to an Instagram story?
The Link sticker replaced the swipe up on October 27, 2021, when Instagram opened it to every account regardless of follower count.
- Start a story: swipe right from the feed or tap the + on your profile picture, then shoot or pick your photo or video.
- Tap the Stickers icon, the square smiley face at the top of the screen.
- Choose Link from the tray. If you can’t spot it, type “link” into the sticker search bar.
- Paste your URL. The help center points to See preview, under the field, so you can check the page people will land on.
- Customize the sticker text if the option appears: “Read the recipe” pulls more taps than a long raw URL.
- Tap Done and place the sticker. Tap it to cycle through colors, pinch to resize.
- Share to your story, or to Close Friends only.
The link lasts 24 hours, like the story itself. To keep it tappable longer, add the story to a Highlight on your profile: the sticker still works there. If you want to push a live story to more people, our guide on how to share a story on Instagram covers all six routes.

How do you add a link to your Instagram bio?
It is the only permanent spot. Since April 2023, Instagram accepts up to five links in a bio. The help center adds that anyone, on or off Instagram, can see them, including when your account is private.
- Go to your profile by tapping your picture in the bottom right.
- Tap Edit profile at the top of the screen.
- Open Links, then tap Add external link.
- Paste the URL and give it a short title if the field is offered.
- Tap Done, then the back arrow.
To change the order: Edit profile, Links, the Options menu, then Reorder links, and drag each link with a long press. On your profile, only the first link shows in full, followed by something like “and 2 more”. Put the one that should get the most clicks at the top.
You manage these links in the mobile app, not on the website. If five are not enough, a Linktree-style page still works, at the cost of one extra tap for your visitor.

How do you send a link in an Instagram DM?
In direct messages, any web address becomes clickable, with no conditions attached.
- Copy the URL from your browser or the app it comes from.
- Open your Instagram messages and the chat with the person or the group.
- Paste the address into the message field. A preview with the page image usually appears after a few seconds.
- Send it. Your contact just has to tap.
For an Instagram post or Reel, the paper plane icon under the content does the job: no need to copy the address at all.
Worth knowing: when link history is turned on, Instagram keeps the pages you open in its in-app browser for 30 days. And a link from a stranger promising you a blue badge is the classic way accounts get hacked.
Can you put a clickable link in an Instagram post or Reel?
You can type a URL into a caption, but it won’t be clickable. Your followers would have to copy it by hand, which almost nobody does. Hence the “link in bio” line you see under so many posts.
That is shifting a little. In March 2026, Meta confirmed to Engadget that it was testing clickable caption links for Meta Verified subscribers, capped at 10 links a month. They only show in the mobile app, not on the website. If you are not in the test, nothing changes for you.
For Reels, two features exist, and neither leads to an outside website:
- Link a reel: when you publish a Reel, the option sits under the caption. You pick one of your Reels and give it a title of 15 characters at most. For a Reel that’s already live, use the Options menu in the top right.
- Links in the Edits app: when you edit your video in Edits, you can add a link to an Instagram account or a public Reel. On export, it becomes a tappable overlay on the video.
For a regular account, the best move is still to mention the link in the caption and put it first in your bio. Shops also have product tags, and advertisers get the call to action button on ads.
How do you copy the link to an Instagram post or profile?
This is the question the other way around: grabbing the address of Instagram content to paste into WhatsApp, an email or another network.
- Under the post or Reel, tap the paper plane icon (Send).
- Tap Copy link at the bottom of the panel.
- Paste it wherever you like.
On a computer, click the Options menu (three dots) next to the post, then Copy link. One catch with private accounts: the link only opens for that account’s followers. Everyone else sees a locked profile.
Your own profile address never changes: instagram.com/ followed by your username. If you change your username, old links to your profile stop working, so update the ones you have posted elsewhere.
Why is the Link sticker missing?
When Instagram opened the sticker to everyone, its announcement listed two exceptions: new accounts, and accounts that repeatedly share hate speech or misinformation. If your account is brand new, give it a few weeks of normal posting.
The other causes are more mundane:
- Outdated app: when a sticker is missing, the help center tells you to check for the latest version in the App Store or Google Play.
- You are making a Reel: some stickers aren’t available for Reels, and Link is one of them.
- Temporary restriction: after a report or a burst of actions, Instagram blocks some features. Our article on Instagram action blocked explains how to get out of it.
How do you get people to tap your link?
- Say why they should tap: write on the story what’s behind the link (“the full recipe”, “20% off until Sunday”). A bare sticker with no context gets ignored.
- One link per story: put three and nobody knows which one to open.
- Announce it in a post: a Reel that shows the topic, then “link in bio” or “link in my story today”. The post brings people in, the bio sends them out.
- Look after the first hours: a story or Reel that starts with engagement gets shown to more people. A bigger base of Instagram followers raises the odds that someone taps your sticker.
- Measure: on a professional account, story insights count link taps.
