How to Tag Someone on Instagram: Posts, Stories, Reels, Collabs

⏱️ Reading time: 7 minutes

To tag someone on Instagram, tap Tag people before you share a photo, Reel or carousel, then tap the image and pick the account. In a story, use the Text tool and type @ followed by the username, for up to 20 people. In a comment or caption, type @username with no space. To have the post appear on two profiles, invite a collaborator instead, up to 5. A well-placed tag brings visitors, and a few Instagram likes convince them to stay.

Tagging, mentioning, collaborating: what’s the difference?

Instagram uses three words for three different actions, and its help pages, which we checked on September 23, 2026, keep them clearly apart.

Action Where What it does
Tag Photo, Reel, carousel The name appears on the image, and the post can show up in that person’s tagged posts tab
Mention (@) Story, comment, caption, note The name becomes a clickable link to their profile
Collab Post, Reel The post appears on both profiles and is shown to both accounts’ followers

The nuance that matters: when you tag or mention someone, your post isn’t shown to their followers. With a collab, it is, and the other person is listed as a co-author.

How do you tag someone in a photo, Reel or carousel?

Before you share

  1. Get your post ready up to the final screen, the one with the caption.
  2. Tap Tag people.
  3. Tap the spot in the photo where the person is.
  4. Type their name or username, then tap the right account in the list.
  5. Tap Done in the top right, then share.

After you’ve shared

  1. Go to your profile and open the post.
  2. Tap the three dots (Options) in the top right, then Edit.
  3. Tap Tag people (you may need to tap Tag first).
  4. Tap the photo, pick the account, then tap Done twice to confirm.

Two official limits: you can’t tag people in someone else’s post, and if your account is private, you can only tag your followers.

How do you mention someone in a story?

  1. Pick the photo or video for your story.
  2. Tap Text (the Aa icon).
  3. Type @ followed immediately by the username, then select the person from the list.
  4. Adjust the options if needed: let the people you mention reshare your story or not, or start a group chat if you mention at least two followers you follow back.
  5. Tap Done, then Your story in the bottom left.

You can mention up to 20 people per photo or video. The name appears underlined, and anyone can tap it to open the profile. The person gets a notification and a direct message with a preview of your story, which disappears from the thread after 24 hours.

Forgot someone? No need to delete the story: open it and tap Mention at the bottom. In that case the name doesn’t show on the story, but the person still gets notified. To pass on a story you’ve been mentioned in, see the methods in how to share a story on Instagram.

How do you mention someone in a comment or caption?

This is the simplest one: type @ followed immediately by the username, with no space, for example “great shot @lea.cooks”. Instagram suggests accounts as you type, so tap the right one to avoid typos.

Mentions work in comments, captions, stories and notes. Instagram says accounts that follow you are notified. If the person has limited who can mention them, the mention won’t go through.

A misspelled mention in a posted comment can be fixed without deleting everything, as we explain in how to edit a comment on Instagram. In a caption, use Edit from the post’s three dots.

How do you invite a collaborator to a post?

  1. Before you publish, tap Tag people.
  2. Tap Invite collaborator.
  3. Search for the account and tap it.
  4. Tap Done, then publish.
  5. Wait for them to accept: the invite lands in the other account’s messages, and they have to accept it.

You can add up to 5 collaborators. A public account can invite public or private accounts; a private account can only invite accounts that follow it. The original creator owns the post: if they delete it, it disappears from the other profiles too. Stories don’t take collaborators, only mentions.

It’s the most direct way to widen your audience: your post is shown to both accounts’ followers, and every collaborator sees the likes and comments.

How can tags help you get seen?

A tag is more than a courtesy. Everyone you tag or mention sees your post, and the people around them can find it through their tagged posts tab or a reshare. A few uses that actually pay off:

  • Mention in your story the accounts that appear in your video: a restaurant, a brand, a friend. Instagram lets them reshare your story to theirs unless you turn that option off. It’s often your best shot at reaching their audience.
  • Tag the brand of products visible in your photo. Brands keep an eye on their tags and sometimes repost the best ones.
  • Credit the photographer or editor: it’s basic etiquette on the platform, and their followers will come and look.
  • Go for a collab with an account your size rather than a dozen tags.

What to avoid: tagging accounts that aren’t in the image just to get their attention. They can remove the tag, and Instagram doesn’t add tags it detects as spam to people’s profiles.

Why can’t I tag someone?

  1. They’ve restricted tags: they only allow people they follow, or nobody. Instagram tells you when you try.
  2. Your account is private and the person doesn’t follow you.
  3. One of you has blocked the other: a blocked account can’t tag or mention you.
  4. It isn’t your post: you can’t tag anyone in someone else’s post.
  5. You’ve hit a limit: 20 mentions per story, 5 collaborators per post.

How do you choose who can tag you?

  1. Go to your profile and tap the menu in the top right.
  2. Under How others can interact with you, tap Tags and mentions.
  3. Under Who can tag you, choose everyone, people you follow or nobody. The Who can @mention you setting works the same way.
  4. Turn on manual approval if you want to approve each post before it shows up in your tagged posts tab.

By default, a post you’re tagged in is added to your profile automatically, unless Instagram detects it as spam. You can also remove yourself from a post or hide it from your profile from the post itself.
