Instagram Music Not Available? Why and How to Fix It in 2026

⏱️ Reading time: 8 minutes

If you don’t have all the music on Instagram, the most common cause is your account type: Meta keeps its licensed music library for personal use, and some business accounts can’t access it. Those accounts only get the Sound Collection, around 14,000 royalty-free tracks. Other causes are your country, a song pulled by its rights holders, or an outdated app. The quickest fix is often switching to a Creator or personal account. Here is the full diagnosis, step by step, so your Reels get the right sound back, and the Instagram likes that come with it.

Why don’t I have all the music on Instagram?

Instagram doesn’t own the music it offers. Meta signs deals with record labels and publishers, and those deals set the rules. Meta’s help center says it plainly: music in the licensed library is intended for personal, non-commercial use. That leads to several limits.

1. Your account type

This is the number one cause. To prevent commercial use, “certain business accounts and certain types of posts” don’t have access to the licensed library, according to Meta. Branded content posts (paid partnerships) are affected too. Those accounts fall back on the Sound Collection, more than 14,000 royalty-free songs and sounds that can even be used in ads.

2. Your country or region

Rights are negotiated country by country. Meta notes that licensed music may not be available in certain countries or regions. A song your friend abroad can see may be missing for you, and the other way round.

3. A licensing deal that changed

When a label pulls a song or changes its contract, the track disappears from the library, sometimes overnight. It can even be muted on Reels you’ve already posted. That’s not a bug on your end.

4. An app problem

An old version of the app, a full cache or an update that’s still rolling out can also make the Music sticker or certain tracks vanish.

Spanish agency Gitana explains it in this video, quoting Instagram head Adam Mosseri:

How do you find out what’s causing it?

Before changing anything, run this three minute test:

  1. Check your account type: on your profile, tap the ☰ menu and look for the “For professionals” section. If “Account type and tools” shows Business, you’ve probably found the cause.
  2. Search for a big hit in a story’s Music sticker or in a Reel’s Audio tool. If it doesn’t show up while your friends have it, it’s your account or your country.
  3. Compare with another account on the same phone (you can add several). If the other account has the music, the problem is the account type, not the app.
  4. Check whether only one song is missing: if everything else works, that track was probably pulled by its rights holders.
  5. If no music shows up at all, even on a personal account, go straight to the technical fixes (update, cache).

Instagram’s official help page Problems with audio on Instagram lists these causes and points to the Sound Collection.

How do you switch account type to get music back?

If you have a business account but you’re mostly a creator, influencer or artist, a Creator account is the right compromise: you keep your insights and pro tools. In practice, agencies find that Creator accounts generally have access to the licensed library, even though Meta doesn’t guarantee it in writing. A personal account has access unless a regional restriction applies.

Here is the exact path as of September 2026, according to Instagram’s help center:

  1. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  2. Tap the ☰ menu (More) to open “Settings and activity”.
  3. Tap “Account type and tools”, then “Account type”.
  4. Tap “Switch account type”.
  5. Choose Creator (or Personal), then tap “Switch”.
  6. Close the app, reopen it and check the Music sticker.

Two things to know. You can switch back at any time. And if you go back to a personal account, you lose the professional dashboard but not your insights: Instagram keeps them for any public account. For a real business (restaurant, shop, brand), keeping the business account is the safer choice, even with a smaller catalog: using a hit song to sell a product is exactly what the licensing deals rule out.

Updates, cache, muted audio: the other fixes

If your account type isn’t the issue, these steps sort out most cases:

  1. Update Instagram from the App Store or Google Play. Some music features only arrive with the latest version.
  2. Clear the cache on Android (phone Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage, Clear cache). On iPhone you have to delete and reinstall the app.
  3. Log out and back in, or restart your phone.
  4. Replace muted audio: if Instagram muted the sound on a posted Reel, you can sometimes pick another track from the post itself. Meta explains how on its page about muted audio.
  5. Use original audio: a Reel already posted with the music you want shows “Use audio”. It’s often the easiest way to grab a trending sound.

Updating fixes more than you’d think. Juliette, a French community manager, watched music drop off her scheduled carousels for days in November 2025, until she installed the new version of the app:

@juliette.comcreative

Ça fait plusieurs jours que ce problème me prend bien la tête sur Instagram 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 Quand je programme mes carrousels ou ceux de mes clients sur insta, j’ai la musique qui saute au moment de la publication.

Does a VPN give you more music?

It’s the trick you read everywhere, and to be honest, it doesn’t fix anything for good. A VPN may change the catalog you see if Instagram places you elsewhere, but rights stay tied to countries. A song that isn’t licensed where you live can get muted on your post, and a business account doesn’t get the licensed library back that way. You may also trigger suspicious login warnings on your account. The right account type or the Sound Collection are better routes.

Business account: which music can you use safely?

If you need to stay on a business account, you have three clean options:

  1. Meta’s Sound Collection: more than 14,000 royalty-free tracks and sounds, right in the stories Music sticker and the Reels Audio tool, cleared for commercial use, ads included.
  2. A music library with a commercial license (Epidemic Sound, Artlist, Soundstripe…), added in your edit before upload. Keep proof of your license.
  3. Your own sound: voiceover, ambient sound, a homemade jingle. A well made original sound can even be picked up by others and put your account on the map.

What you should avoid is adding a commercial hit in CapCut and uploading the video: that’s the best way to get your audio muted or your video blocked. Meta also notes that the more full-length tracks a video contains, the more likely it is to be limited, so stick to short clips. And once the sound is right, the Reel still needs visibility: an early boost in Instagram followers helps your account earn trust from new visitors.

Finally got the right music on your Reel?

Early reactions help Instagram show it to more people. A boost in likes gives it that first push.

FAQ

Why can’t I add music to my Instagram story? story
Most often because you have a business account: Meta keeps its licensed library for personal use and limits some business accounts to the Sound Collection. Your country, a pulled song or an outdated app can also play a part. Start by checking your account type under “Account type and tools”.
Do Creator accounts get all the music? account
Generally yes, that’s what agencies report, but Meta doesn’t formally guarantee it: its page only mentions “certain business accounts” being excluded. Regional restrictions and pulled songs apply to everyone. For a creator, it’s the best balance between music and pro tools.
Why did the music disappear from my Reel? muted
Because the deal with the rights holders changed, the track isn’t licensed for your account type, or the owner blocked your video. Instagram then mutes the sound. You can often swap the track for another one from the post, as the help page on muted audio explains.
What is Meta’s Sound Collection? royalty free
It’s Meta’s library for accounts without access to licensed music: more than 14,000 royalty-free songs and sound effects. You’ll find it in the stories Music sticker and the Reels Audio tool, and it can be used for commercial purposes, ads included.
Can you add music in CapCut to get around it? editing
Technically yes, but Instagram detects protected tracks. Without the rights, the sound can be muted or the video blocked, especially on a business account. CapCut is great with royalty-free music or tracks bought under a commercial license, not for sneaking in a chart hit.
