How to Message Someone on TikTok (Button Missing?)

There are only two routes in: the Message button on someone’s profile, or the Inbox tab at the bottom of the app. When that button isn’t there, the reason is almost always one of three: your account is registered as under 16, the other person closed their inbox, or one of you blocked the other. Accounts that follow you back skip the request queue entirely, which is why a base of TikTok followers matters far beyond the number on your profile.

Opening a chat: the three ways in

The shortest one goes through the person’s profile.

1. Tap the Search button at the top, type the username, open the profile.
2. Under the bio, tap Message, next to “Follow” or “Friends”.
3. Type your text, then tap the send arrow.

You can also open Inbox at the bottom of the screen: existing chats reopen with one tap, and a Chat button sits at the top in the regions where TikTok has rolled it out.

Third way in, the one most people use without thinking about it: sharing. On a video, a sound, an effect or a hashtag, tap Share (or press and hold the video), then tap the profile photo of each recipient. You can pick several and add a note before sending. Private videos are the exception, they can’t be shared at all.

Who can message whom in September 2026

First rule, and it doesn’t bend: direct messaging is only available to accounts aged 16 and over. Between 13 and 15, it doesn’t exist, private account or public. No button, no setting to unlock, no workaround.

Above 16, TikTok sorts everyone into three buckets, and that sorting decides everything.

• Friends and accounts you follow. A friend is a follower you follow back. Their messages land straight in your inbox, no request needed.
• Potential connections. Your followers plus people you may know, pulled from phone contacts or Facebook friends. They go through a message request.
• Others on TikTok. Everyone else. Also a request, and only one until it gets accepted.

While we’re here: the old mutual follow requirement, still repeated everywhere, is gone. A stranger can message you unless you’ve closed your inbox. On a private account it’s closed from the start, since nobody can send a request without following you first. Under 18, requests are set to “Don’t receive” by default, and a parent who has linked their account to yours through Family Pairing can lock messaging from their own phone.

What you can actually send in a chat

TikTok messaging changed a lot at the end of August 2025. What fits in a conversation now:

• Text, emojis, GIFs and stickers. The Emoji button opens the panels, the sticker store and your favourites.
• Personal photos and videos, up to nine per message. Shot on the spot or pulled from your camera roll, with editing tools before you hit send. This was the missing piece for years.
• Voice notes of 60 seconds maximum. Press and hold the record button, release to send, swipe sideways to cancel, or swipe up to keep recording hands free. On the receiving side, “Transcribe” turns it into text.
• TikTok content: videos, sounds, effects, hashtags, profiles.
• Voice calls, in chats where you’ve already replied to each other. Reserved for 16 and over, missing in some countries, and never recorded by TikTok.
• Reactions and targeted replies. Press and hold a message for an emoji reaction, a quoted reply or a forward.

Two features stay underused. Translation first: press and hold a message, tap Translate, and the text appears under the original, visible only to you. Then groups: private group chats hold up to 32 people, but only friends can be invited; public group chats go up to 300 members and can be found like an interest, wherever TikTok has switched them on.

Where TikTok DMs fall short of Instagram and WhatsApp

Worth knowing before you rely on it for work: TikTok’s inbox is still the most locked down of the big platforms.

• No end to end encryption. TikTok says so plainly: messages are encrypted in transit and at rest, but the company can decrypt them for valid legal process. Instagram no longer does better, having dropped the option on 8 May 2026. Only WhatsApp keeps it on by default.
• A photo can’t be the first message. Inside a request, a stranger can only send content already published on TikTok.
• Three minutes to take it back, against hours on WhatsApp and no limit at all on Instagram. No editing a sent message, no scheduled sending, and no video calls.
• Plenty of features depend on your country. Voice notes, private groups, public groups, the Chat button: TikTok flags each one as not available everywhere.
• One request per person. Deleted or ignored, it can’t be sent again. A profile with traction gets answers, which is another reason TikTok followers change how a stranger reads your request.

Why the Message button isn’t showing

This is the question that stops the most people, and it has nine possible answers, ordered here from most to least common. No need to dig through menus at random.

1. Your account is registered as under 16. No messaging at all, so no button. The only way out is a report: Profile → ☰ → Settings and privacy → Feedback and help → Report a problem, with photo ID attached. It takes several days and the answer isn’t automatic.
2. The person set “Others on TikTok” to Don’t receive. The button vanishes for everyone they don’t follow. Nothing to fix on your side.
3. They’re under 18. Their message requests are closed by default, without them touching a thing.
4. Their account is private and you don’t follow each other. Following isn’t enough, they have to approve you.
5. You already sent a request that wasn’t accepted. Only one is allowed. Until they reply, the field stays dead.
6. One of you blocked the other. The giveaway: the profile opens but every video is gone.
7. Your own messaging is restricted. After a report is upheld, TikTok suspends sending for 24 to 48 hours, or drops the account into a view only state for 72 hours up to a week.
8. Family Pairing is active. The menu opens but refuses to save.
9. A bug, or the account is gone. Update the app, force close it, then compare with the web version. If the profile no longer opens, the account is deleted or suspended.

Set who can message you and filter requests

It all lives on one screen: Profile → ☰ → Settings and privacy → Privacy → Direct messages.

• Potential connections and Others on TikTok: two independent rows, two possible values, Requests or Don’t receive. Registered Business and Organisation accounts get a third option, Inbox, which drops messages straight into the thread.
• Read status. On by default from 18, and mutual: the other person only sees that you read their message if you both have it on.
• Safe mode. On by default, it hides messages with sensitive content without stopping you from opening them.
• Filtered keywords. Turn the setting on, then add words one at a time.

Requests get sorted in Inbox → Message requests. At the top, the Filtered requests button opens the second queue, the one safe mode and your keywords set aside. On each request: Accept, Delete or Report, plus a “Tap here” that also offers to block the sender. Accepting sends the person a notification in the chat. One reassuring detail: switching a setting to “Don’t receive” erases nothing and doesn’t cut off conversations you already have.

Deleting a message: the 3 minute window

Press and hold the message, then tap Delete. Two choices appear, and they do completely different things.

• Delete for me. The message leaves your screen and stays visible for the recipient. Always available, no time limit.
• Delete for everyone. It goes from both sides, but the option only exists within 3 minutes of sending. After that it disappears from the menu for good. The same 3 minute window applies to voice notes.

To wipe a whole chat: in Inbox, swipe it and tap Delete then Confirm on iOS, press and hold then Delete on Android. Watch out for the classic misunderstanding: that deletion is local, the chat stays intact on the other side. And no, a sent message can’t be edited on TikTok. You pull it back and rewrite it, inside three minutes.

Reporting a chat, blocking, muting

Three actions people mix up constantly, with completely different effects.

Report. From the inbox, swipe the chat on iOS or press and hold it on Android, then tap Report. Inside the chat, a Report button sits at the top, and More options … offers it too. For one specific message, press and hold it then tap Report. A filtered request can be reported straight from the queue, without accepting it.

Block. On iOS, swipe the chat, tap More then Block; on Android, press and hold then Block. A blocked account can’t send you anything and no longer sees your videos.

Mute. The gentle version: the chat stays, the notifications stop. Same gesture, but you pick Mute. A neighbouring setting silences someone’s voice calls without blocking them.

What follows depends on severity: an in app warning on a first violation, sending suspended for 24 to 48 hours, a view only account for 72 hours up to a week, then a permanent ban if the behaviour continues. Zero tolerance content, child exploitation above all, triggers an immediate ban and a report to NCMEC.
