How to Change Your Age on TikTok: Proof, Appeal, Delays

The date of birth on a TikTok account cannot be edited from the settings. The only route is a request to support, under Settings and privacy then Report a problem, or an age appeal when a feature has already been taken away. You have to prove the exact date: an official ID document with a selfie, a credit card authorisation, or facial age estimation in Europe. TikTok reviews the case, updates the date if the proof holds, and keeps the restrictions if it does not. An account left restricted for several weeks restarts faster on a base of TikTok followers.

Why the field cannot be edited

Almost every tutorial describes the same path: profile, settings, account information, date of birth, fix it. It no longer exists in September 2026, and the “editable once in the settings” variant rests on no official page.

Under Settings and privacy, the Account section lets you change your username, phone number, email address and password. The date of birth, when it shows up, appears with no edit button. That date governs access to LIVE, direct messages, gifts and monetisation, and a freely editable field would turn those gates into decoration.

Two routes are left. A support request fits the case where the date is wrong but nothing is blocked. An age appeal opens when TikTok has removed an access because it treats you as too young, and that is the route that officially rewrites the account’s date when it succeeds.

Who this process is for

This page helps someone whose date is wrong: a year mistyped at sign-up, an account opened by a brother or a sister, a date invented years ago. The result is an account cut off from features its owner is entitled to use.

It does not help a minor pass as an adult, and there is no reason to be coy about that. The restrictive settings on an account under sixteen are not a punishment: they close the doors that adults with bad intentions walk through.

A false declaration costs something. Claiming an age you do not have breaks the terms of service and exposes the account to permanent suspension. Sending somebody else’s document, or one that has been retouched, makes the file worse, because verification compares the name, the date and the face.

And if the account holder is under thirteen, no procedure will give the account back. Thirteen is the minimum age, TikTok says it removes roughly six million accounts a month worldwide, and a correction request only confirms the reason.

The exact procedure, step by step

When nothing is blocked yet

1. Open your profile, tap the three-line menu at top right, then Settings and privacy.
2. Scroll down to the support section and tap Report a problem.
3. Pick Account and profile, then Editing profile. If that entry is missing, take Other.
4. TikTok offers help articles and asks whether the problem is solved. Answer No: that refusal is what opens the free-text form.
5. Write the request out: the date on file, the exact date, what caused the error, the account username and the linked email. Short and precise travels better than a story.
6. Attach the supporting document if the form allows it, otherwise wait to be asked.
7. Send it, then watch the app’s Inbox, the System notifications tab, and the email on the account.

When a feature has already been taken away

1. Open the Inbox, then System notifications and Account updates.
2. Open the notification announcing the loss of access and tap Appeal.
3. Choose the verification method offered for your age bracket and your country.
4. Finish the verification in one sitting: the code on screen is valid for that attempt only.

Note the removal date, because the only real deadline starts there: you have 180 days to file the appeal. After that the restriction becomes permanent and the date of birth stays the one on file.

What TikTok accepts as proof

The official list comes down to four methods, and the one you are offered depends on the age on file.

• Selfie with ID, from 16 upwards: a photo of an official government-issued document, plus a self-portrait where you hold that document with a unique code supplied by TikTok.
• Ask your parent or guardian, for 16 and 17 year olds: the parent confirms by email, states your date of birth and validates a credit card authorisation.
• Photo with a trusted adult, for 16 and 17 year olds: a photo of you next to somebody aged 25 or over holding a sheet marked “TikTok proof of age”, your date of birth and the unique code.
• Credit card authorisation, from 18 upwards: a temporary bank hold, with no purchase.

In the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, facial age estimation by Yoti is added. The scan lasts about a second and the image is deleted right after the calculation.

On documents: passport, national identity card, driving licence. The name and the date have to be readable, with no glare, no cropped corner, no finger across the characters. The birth certificate older articles keep quoting is not in the official list. Mask the serial numbers and the address, and leave the name, the photo and the date visible.

On retention, TikTok is explicit: documents sent in for an appeal are deleted within 90 days, copies of ID documents are destroyed right after processing, and only the confirmed date of birth is kept as long as the account exists.

How long TikTok takes to answer

No processing time is published by TikTok, and that is the first thing the other guides invent. The “3 to 5 business days” copied everywhere comes from no official source.

What people actually observe depends on the method. Facial estimation and credit card authorisation are automatic and hand back a verdict within minutes. An ID document goes through human review: count on two to seven days, sometimes longer after a wave of checks.

When the request succeeds, the date changes on file straight away, but features do not always come back in the same second. Close the app, reopen it, log out and log back in.

Sending the same request three times creates three tickets that queue behind one another, speeding up nothing.

If the request is refused

A refusal does not delete the account, it leaves the restriction in place. On an account treated as belonging to somebody aged 13 to 17, LIVE replays are erased 30 days after creation, and direct messages stay switched off for the 13 to 15 bracket. The only case where the account disappears is a holder judged younger than thirteen.

Rejection reasons are almost always material:

• document unreadable, shot at an angle or cropped;
• name on the document different from the name on the account;
• date of birth covered by a finger or by glare;
• expired document;
• selfie without the unique code visible, or a code from an earlier attempt;
• document visibly belonging to somebody else.

Fix the material cause and file again inside the 180 day window. If the same method fails twice, switch to another, since the credit card authorisation often goes through where a photo of a document gets stuck. Then go looking for a human: Report a problem, at the bottom, Chat with us, quoting the ticket number. In the European Union, the refusal message also opens an internal complaint and a referral to an out-of-court dispute settlement body.

One thing to avoid: opening a new account to start over with the right date. You lose the followers, the videos and the history, and if the point is to get around a removal for age, the move is itself a breach.

Adult account restricted like a minor

The opposite situation has spread since 16 January 2026, when TikTok rolled out reinforced age detection across the European Economic Area, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The system reads profile information, published videos and on-platform behaviour, then routes accounts that look like they belong to a child under thirteen to a specialised moderator.

An adult with a young face, a bio carrying the wrong year or a phone shared at home is sometimes enough to tip the estimate. It shows up fast: the LIVE button vanishes, gifts become unreachable, direct messages cut out, and a message announces that the age requirements are not met.

The fix runs through the same appeal, and your choice of method counts. Take the adult routes: credit card authorisation or Selfie with ID. Facial estimation is precisely what gets adults with young faces wrong, and its accuracy varies across skin tones, so switching route beats rescanning your face ten times.

The 180 days run from the removal, not from the day you noticed it. An account left restricted pays twice: the feature you lost, and the reach that collapses while you wait. That is often where a batch of TikTok followers serves to restart a profile the algorithm had stopped pushing.

What the correction really changes

The brackets are sharp, and the new date will move you from one to another in one direction or the other.

From 13 to 15

Private account by default, direct messages unavailable, LIVE and gifts out of reach.

From 16 to 17

Direct messages open at sixteen. LIVE and buying coins stay closed, and a sixty minute screen time limit applies by default under eighteen.

From 18 upwards

LIVE becomes possible, so does buying and sending gifts, nineteen in South Korea, and the creator reward programmes open up.

A correction can turn against you. If your real date puts you at fifteen, a successful request will add restrictions: account switched back to private, messaging cut off. That is the expected outcome, not a bug.

Unlocking a feature does not hand the audience back, though. The recovery is decided in the first hours of the next videos.
