Instagram Dark Mode: How to Turn It On, iPhone and PC

Stop digging through Instagram’s settings: the app has no theme option. It follows your phone’s appearance, so the switch lives in iOS or Android settings, never inside Instagram. One exception, the desktop: instagram.com has a toggle of its own, under “More” in the bottom left. This page gives you both exact paths, the automatic day and night schedule, what stays white anyway, and how to go back to light. If it is your profile you want to look better, that is what Instagram followers are for.

Why there is no dark mode inside the app

Nine articles out of ten send you to “Settings and activity”, then to a “Theme” row where you would pick Light, Dark or System. That row does not exist in Instagram. It exists in the Facebook app, and that is where the copy-paste comes from.

Instagram’s own Help Center is blunt about iOS: dark mode cannot be turned on or off in the Instagram app for iPhone or iPad, and can only be adjusted in your device settings. The official article has five tabs, Android app, iPad, iPhone, computer and mobile browser, and the only one with numbered steps is the computer tab.

Three practical consequences, and they change how you should look for it.

• Nothing is broken on your side. If a tutorial describes a menu you cannot find, the tutorial is wrong.
• Turning Instagram black turns everything else black. The theme is a system setting, so your messages, your browser and every other compatible app follow along.
• You need iOS 13 or Android 10 at minimum. Instagram shipped its dark theme in October 2019 on those two versions. On an older phone the feature simply is not there.

The comparison with its neighbour is telling: TikTok does have a display setting inside the app, with Dark, Light or Use device settings. It sits in the same Settings and privacy menu you go through to reach your TikTok watch history, so the method there is genuinely different.

Instagram dark mode on iPhone

Three screens, and none of them is in Instagram.

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Display & Brightness.
3. Under “Appearance”, pick Dark.

Instagram is black next time you open it. If the app was already running in the background, the switch may not show right away: close it from the app switcher, then relaunch it.

Faster for daily use: open Control Center, press and hold the brightness slider, and a Dark Mode button appears. One tap and you flip it without going near Settings.

Instagram dark mode on Android

Same principle, with one catch: the wording changes by brand.

1. Open Settings.
2. Go to Display, or Display & touch depending on the skin.
3. Turn on Dark theme.

On a Pixel the row is called Dark theme. On Samsung, “Dark” sits right at the top of Display, with a “Dark mode settings” submenu underneath. On Xiaomi and Redmi it is “Dark mode” inside Display. When in doubt, type “dark” or “night” in the settings search bar.

One shortcut worth setting up: the Dark theme quick settings tile. Pull the notification shade down twice, tap the edit pencil, add the tile, and you flip it in one tap. If Instagram stays light after the switch, close it from Recents and reopen it.

One thing to avoid: Force dark mode in developer options. It repaints apps that have no dark theme, and Instagram has one. The result is not blacker, just badly rendered, with unreadable text and washed out images.

Schedule the day and night switch

This is the setting that makes dark mode liveable: light during the day, black at night, without thinking about it.

On iPhone

In Settings, Display & Brightness, turn on Automatic. Then tap Options and choose between Sunset to Sunrise and Custom Schedule, where you set both times yourself. Sunset to Sunrise relies on location: with location services off, the switch fires badly or not at all.

On Android

Tap into Dark theme rather than just toggling it, then open Schedule. Three choices: None, Turns on from sunset to sunrise, or Turns on at custom time.

A useful warning: that sunset switch broke for a share of Pixel owners after a feature drop, on stable Android 15 and on Android 16 betas alike. If your schedule never fires even though everything looks right, move to fixed times instead: they depend on no location data at all.

Instagram dark mode on desktop

This is where most guides get it wrong. On a computer, instagram.com has a toggle of its own. You do not need to flip Windows or macOS, and you do not need to install anything.

1. Open instagram.com and log in.
2. Click More, at the bottom left of the sidebar.
3. Click Switch appearance, then flip the toggle on.

The detail that explains half the confusion on this topic: the setting is stored per browser and per device, not on your account. Two computers, two toggles. Chrome and Firefox on the same machine, two toggles as well. The same path exists in a mobile browser.

Which makes the extensions sold for “Instagram dark mode” pointless. They predate this toggle, they ask for read access to the page, and they now stack on top of the site’s native dark theme, which is what produces those muddy colours.

If “Switch appearance” is missing from your sidebar, the fallback is the system theme, which instagram.com can read: on macOS, System Settings, Appearance, Dark; on Windows, Settings, Personalization, Colors, then Dark.

What stays white anyway

Dark mode repaints the interface, not the content. Several areas stay bright, and none of them is a bug.

• Photos and videos. They are never altered. A photo shot on a white background stays a white rectangle in a black feed, which is what makes half the screen still look light.
• Conversations with a chat theme. The most common case and the least explained. If a chat has a theme applied, that theme beats dark mode: the background stays coloured while the rest of the app is black. Open the chat, tap the name at the top, then set the theme back to default.
• The in-app browser. A link opened inside Instagram shows the destination site’s own design, usually white. Instagram has no hand in it.
• Camera, Stories and the Reels editor. Already dark by design, so the setting changes nothing there.
• The login screen and app launch. The split second of white flash on opening does not always follow the theme.

If it is none of those areas, move to the next section: there really is a problem.

Dark mode is not applying

The most reported symptom is an app that is half white, half dark: light stories tray, black feed underneath. That is not a bad setting on your end. From 16 October 2025, Android users watched Instagram ignore their phone’s dark theme, sometimes showing a fully white interface, sometimes mixing both themes on the same screen. Meta never acknowledged it, and the workaround going around, toggling dark theme off and on, only held for a few app launches.

Run this sequence, in order:

1. Fully close Instagram from Recents, then reopen it. Plenty of theme switches only land on app restart.
2. Update the app. Rendering regressions get fixed by version, not by setting.
3. Restart the phone, which resyncs the system theme with apps that read it wrong.
4. On Android, clear the cache in Settings, Apps, Instagram, Storage. You lose nothing.
5. Check battery saver, which forces dark theme on some skins and then drops it on its own.
6. As a last resort, reinstall, with a way to recover your login code at hand.

On desktop, an instagram.com that stays light is not fixed in the operating system: the sidebar toggle takes priority, and it belongs to the browser you have open.

Going back to light mode

Going back follows the same path. What trips people up is what they forget to switch off along the way.

On iPhone, set Appearance back to Light, and above all turn Automatic off. This is the classic miss: leave the schedule running and the screen goes black again at sunset, which is when people decide Instagram changed its own theme.

On Android, turn Dark theme off, then set Schedule to None. Check battery saver too, since it can switch it back on by itself.

On desktop, the system theme will not help: reopen “More”, then “Switch appearance”, and flip the toggle off in every browser where you turned it on.

And to be plain about it: keeping Instagram light while the rest of the phone is dark is not possible. No per-app override exists outside developer options, which do the opposite.

Is it really black, and the battery question

Instagram’s dark theme is very deep, close to black across large surfaces, but it keeps dark greys for fields, cards and sheets. It is not an absolute black theme built for AMOLED, so if you expected a screen that switches off, that is where the letdown comes from.

On battery, the nuance nobody makes actually matters. On an OLED panel the black pixels are off, so the saving is real, mostly at high brightness, but it stays modest. On an LCD panel the backlight stays on whatever the theme, so the saving is zero. That still covers the iPhone SE and iPhone 11 and plenty of budget Androids, where the only benefit is eye comfort at night.

To go further, iOS offers Settings, Accessibility, Display & Text Size, then Reduce White Point, which knocks down the intensity of whatever brightness is left. Android files the equivalent under accessibility as extra dim, below minimum brightness.
