“Chill Guy” is a cartoon dog in a grey sweater, jeans and red sneakers, hands in his pockets, with a small smirk. American artist Phillip Banks posted him on X on October 4, 2023. In November 2024 he became TikTok’s “I’m just a chill guy” meme: you describe a stressful situation, then shrug it off, over the piano of “Hinoki Wood”. So yes, he’s a dog, but he plays a guy. If you want your own version to get seen, a push in TikTok views helps it get off the ground.

Where does Chill Guy come from?
A Phillip Banks drawing, October 2023
The character first appeared on October 4, 2023 on the X account of Phillip Banks, an American illustrator. His caption: “my new character. his whole deal is he’s a chill guy that lowkey doesn’t give a f***”. The drawing did fine, nothing more, for almost a year.
First lift-off on TikTok, late August 2024
On August 30, 2024, the TikTok account .blitzerzz posted a slideshow mixing the drawing with other memes, set to Roddy Ricch’s “Ricch Forever”. Right after, an edit built on a Dexter quote passed 4.5 million views on September 4, and a repost hit 13.8 million the next day (figures compiled by Wikipedia).
The real explosion, November 2024
The second wave, the one everybody saw, arrived in mid-November 2024. The format settled: a line describing a situation, then “but I’m just a chill guy”. The sound settled too: the piano of “Hinoki Wood” by musician Gia Margaret. In France, a local version, “j’suis juste un mec chill”, filled the For You feed within days. The video below, a 3D animation posted on November 24, 2024, makes a point of crediting the creator.

How does the “just a chill guy” trend work?
It’s a two-step joke. First a line that sets up a problem or a flaw: “you have three exams tomorrow and haven’t studied”, “your mom saw your search history”. Then the punchline: “but I’m just a chill guy”. The dog shows up on screen, often through green screen, while the piano plays.
Three variations kept coming back:
- The slideshow: photos of you or your friends, with the dog popping in at the end.
- The swapped chill guy: the dog is replaced by a footballer, a politician or a coworker who stays calm in an absurd situation.
- The spin-offs: “chill girl”, or the opposite, a panicking version for people who clearly can’t stay calm.
Non-English creators often keep the line in English, which is part of why the meme travelled so easily.
Why did Chill Guy catch on so hard?
Because he says out loud what a lot of people do anyway: pretend nothing gets to them. The drawing looks relaxed, the caption describes a disaster, and that gap is the joke. Some creators read the meme differently, as a picture of young men hiding stress behind a pose.
The piano helped too. “Hinoki Wood” climbed to number two on the Billboard TikTok Top 50 for the week of December 7, 2024. A quiet track in a feed full of loud music stands out.
And the format takes zero skill: one line, one image, one sound. Anyone can make one in five minutes, which is often what separates an average trend from a flood. When everyone posts the same format, a few TikTok likes in the first hour keep your video from sinking in the pile.
The creator, the copyright and the memecoin: what happened?
A crypto token called $CHILLGUY launched on November 15, 2024 on the Solana blockchain, created by an anonymous developer. DL News (Tim Craig, November 21, 2024) reported that it reached a $500 million valuation within days.
On November 21, Phillip Banks posted on X that Chill Guy had been “copyrighted, like, legally” and announced takedowns against for-profit uses. He made clear he wasn’t going after regular people’s TikToks, only unauthorized merch and crypto tokens, which he said he would never approve. The token’s valuation then fell to around $220 million. Banks was harassed and set his account to private.
He later took back control of the character’s business: official plush toys, a collaboration with collectibles brand Youtooz, and a pop-up at Festival Walk mall in Hong Kong from April 11 to May 5, 2025. As of September 2026, I found no new public action from him, but the rule hasn’t changed: free for personal memes, licensed for commercial use.
Can a brand use Chill Guy?
Plenty did in November 2024. Wikipedia lists Adidas, Uber Eats, Sprite, Casetify and the NFL on CBS and March Madness accounts, and French retailer La Boutique Officielle posted its own “chill guy” on November 21. India’s BJP party even used it in politics.
The catch is copyright. Phillip Banks was clear: the meme is free for individuals, not for commercial use. A brand that reuses the drawing without a deal risks a takedown or worse. Two clean options: ask the artist for a license, or keep the format (the line, the piano, the relaxed pose) with your own character or your team on camera. And check that the sound is in TikTok’s Commercial Music Library.
