How to Delete Your Instagram Account Permanently (2026)

⏱️ Reading time: 8 minutes

Deleting an Instagram account is requested inside Meta’s Accounts Center: Settings and privacy, Accounts Center, Personal details, Account ownership and control, Deactivation or deletion, Delete account. Your profile vanishes for everyone straight away, Instagram then waits 30 days before erasing anything, and the erasure itself can take up to 90 days. Logging back in during that window cancels the request. Export your photos first, because the tool is gone once the profile is. If the real problem is an account that stopped growing, look at our Instagram followers instead.

Deleting or deactivating: what actually differs

Both options live on the same screen, one line apart, and the app preselects deactivation. That is why so many people think they deleted an account that is only sleeping.

Deactivation hides the profile and touches nothing. Photos, followers, conversations and drafts stay put, the username stays reserved for you, and logging back in switches everything on again, with no time limit.

Deletion starts a countdown. Once it expires, the profile, posts, comments, likes and follower list are gone for good. The help centre is blunt about it: a deleted account cannot be restored.

If you are still unsure, take the reversible route. Our dedicated guide walks through it in how to deactivate your Instagram account. Same silence, without gambling eight years of memories on a three-week mood.

What to do before you tap the button

Most tutorials give this one line, and it is the part you cannot undo: once the profile is deleted, Instagram’s export tool is no longer available to you. No form and no support agent will hand your photos back.

So run the export first. In Accounts Center, open Your information and permissions, then Export your information and Create export. Pick the profile, choose export to device, then set the date range, the format and the media quality. A video-heavy account produces a large file.

Two details worth knowing. First, the archive stays downloadable for only 4 days in the available downloads section, so start the export on a day you will be near a computer. Second, the file does not include messages you unsent. Anything pulled out of a chat resurfaces nowhere.

Use the same moment to note which services you sign into with Instagram, and to warn the people who only reach you by DM. Nobody gets a notification when you leave.

How to delete your Instagram account step by step

The help centre describes two different Accounts Centers, both still in circulation in September 2026, with different labels. Look at the bottom of the Accounts Center screen before following any step list, or you will hunt for a button your build does not have.

If you see “Manage accounts” at the bottom:

  1. Open Settings and privacy, then the Accounts Center card.
  2. Tap Profiles and personal details.
  3. Tap Manage next to the account type you want to remove.
  4. Choose Deactivation or deletion, then the account concerned.
  5. Select Delete account, then Continue.

If you see “Accounts” at the bottom:

  1. Open Settings and privacy, then Accounts Center.
  2. Tap Personal details under the account settings.
  3. Tap Account ownership and control.
  4. Choose Deactivation or deletion, then the profile you mean.
  5. Select Delete account, pick a reason, enter your password and confirm.

From a browser, the most reliable shortcut is accountscenter.instagram.com/personal_info/account_ownership_and_control/, which opens the right screen once you sign in. The address copied around for years, instagram.com/accounts/remove/request/permanent/, no longer reaches a form: checked on 10 September 2026, it redirects to the help article. Any site still calling it the direct path has not tested it.

Before you confirm, read the username twice: the screen lists every profile sitting in the same Accounts Center. Check as well that the selected option really is Delete account, because the app offers the other one first.

30 days, 90 days: the real timeline

Three different durations get quoted, and they describe different things. Here is what Meta writes, read on 10 September 2026.

  • Immediately. Your profile, posts and interactions become invisible to everyone else. A link to your page returns an error, exactly like a deactivation.
  • 30 days. This is the cooling-off window. During it the content stays subject to Instagram’s terms and is not accessible to anyone on the platform. The help centre adds a line nobody quotes: the number of days you have to cancel a deletion varies by region. So do not treat 30 days as a contractual promise.
  • Up to 90 days. That is how long the erasure process itself may take once the cooling-off period is over.
  • After 90 days. Copies may remain in the backup system used to recover data after an outage, and Meta may keep some information for legal or risk-prevention reasons.

So your account becomes unfindable the same day, but complete erasure is measured in months. Guides announcing that “everything is wiped after 30 days” are mixing up the cooling-off period and the technical deletion.

How to cancel while the clock runs

There is no cancel button, and that is deliberate. Open the app or instagram.com, enter your username and password, and the request drops. The profile comes back with its posts, followers and conversations in place.

Keep access to the linked email address and phone number, because a late login often triggers a verification code. And if your accounts share the same Accounts Center, logging in with Facebook works too, which saves people who forgot the Instagram password.

An account returning after a long gap often reaches fewer people for a few days, while Instagram retests your posts. Two or three decent pieces in the first week settle that, and a few Instagram likes restart the engine.

What survives deletion

Deletion does not erase your trace everywhere. Four things stay behind, and most people only find out afterwards.

The messages you sent. Meta states it plainly for messaging: copies of the messages you sent are stored in your contacts’ inboxes and can stay visible to them after your profile is deleted. If you want a message gone, unsend it one by one before you leave, and know that an unsent message no longer appears in your own export either.

What other people posted. A screenshot of your story or a photo you were tagged in does not belong to you, so nothing goes away on that side.

Your username, partly. You can sign up again with the same handle as long as nobody has claimed it in the meantime. Two exceptions: a profile removed for breaking the community guidelines may not get its name back, and a new account on the same email inherits no content.

The connected apps. Threads and Edits depend on the Instagram account, so their content leaves with it. Mind the direction: deleting Threads does not delete Instagram, but the reverse is not true.

The six cases that get people stuck

1. You lost the password. No login, no deletion: the help centre states that Meta cannot delete a profile on your behalf, for security reasons. Reset the password first. Our guide on changing your Instagram password covers all three situations, including a lost email.

2. The account was hacked. Do not ask for deletion, ask for recovery, at instagram.com/hacked. A stolen account that the attacker deletes cannot be restored, while recovery stays possible as long as the window has not closed.

3. The button is not there. Depending on the installed build, the deactivation or deletion screen sometimes shows only one of the two options, or the flow stops before the confirmation. Start again from a browser, including the phone’s own browser: the web route is the more dependable of the two.

4. Your account is linked to Facebook. Two similar-looking actions do very different things. Removing an account from an Accounts Center only cuts the shared experiences, and the help centre notes that any profiles associated with that account are removed with it. Deleting the account is the other screen, the irreversible one. Neither touches your Facebook profile, which has its own line.

5. You run a business or creator account. Same path, but a profile still tied to a Facebook Page or driven from Business Suite sometimes shows no option at all. Disconnect the account from the Page first. Expect running ads to stop and insights to go.

6. It is a teen account. A teen can always delete their own account, but in most regions neither their parents nor Instagram can do it for them. Some local laws open an exception through parental supervision. No form replaces logging in.

One agency note: if the actual reason for leaving is a profile that stalled, deletion fixes nothing. Starting over costs months, while a little volume on your first posts, say some Instagram comments, shows within days.

Before you erase it all, try restarting it

Real followers, gradual delivery, and your password is never asked for.

Frequently asked questions

How long before the deletion is permanent? timeline
Instagram announces 30 days of cooling off, during which logging back in cancels the request, then an erasure that can take up to 90 days. The help centre notes that the cancellation window varies by region, so do not count on exactly 30 days.
Can you delete an account without the password? password
No. Meta states it cannot delete a profile for you, for security reasons: you have to be able to log in. Reset the password by email or SMS first. Services promising to remove an old account without credentials remove nothing.
Do my direct messages disappear? messages
No. Copies of the messages you sent stay stored in your contacts’ inboxes and can remain visible to them after deletion. For a message to truly vanish, unsend it from the chat before you go, one at a time.
Will I get my username back? handle
You can sign up again with the same name as long as nobody claimed it in the meantime, but you get back neither the posts nor the followers. An account deleted for breaking the community guidelines may not recover its handle at all.
Does deleting Instagram also delete Facebook? accounts center
No. In a shared Accounts Center each account has its own line on the deactivation or deletion screen and you pick the one you mean. Removing an account from the Accounts Center is yet another action, which cuts shared experiences without erasing anything.
