How to Share a Story on Instagram: All 6 Ways in 2026

⏱️ Reading time: 8 minutes

“Sharing a story” means six different things on Instagram, and each one has its own button. When you post, you pick between your followers, your close friends and a list of contacts. A story that is already live can be sent in a DM, copied as a link, or pushed out to WhatsApp. Someone else’s story can be reshared, but only under conditions. Every path is below, along with what stops it from working. And for any of this to matter, you first need Instagram followers who actually watch to the end.

The six ways to share: the table

The word share covers actions that use different buttons and follow different rules. Here is the full map, checked in September 2026.

What you want to do The path
Post my story for my followers Story editor, then Your story on the destination screen
Send a story to two or three people Paper plane at the bottom of the story, then Send next to each name
Share my story outside Instagram Three dots at the bottom of the story, then Copy link or Share to
Reshare someone’s story Share icon under their story, public account required
Put a feed post in my story Paper plane under the post, then Add to story
Share with a small circle Close friends on the destination screen, or Hide story from

Two rows get mixed up constantly. Sending a story in a DM does not put it in your story: it lands in a private conversation. Copying the link does the opposite, taking it out of Instagram so that even people without the app can watch.

Sharing your story with your followers when you post

This is the basic share, and the only one you decide before publishing. Once your photo or video is ready in the editor, you tap the arrow in the bottom right and land on a destination screen. That screen is where everything happens.

  1. Open the story camera by swiping right from your feed.
  2. Capture your content, then add text, stickers or music.
  3. Tap the arrow in the bottom right to bring up the destination screen.
  4. Tick Your story for your followers, Close friends for the green list, or both.
  5. You can also tick individual contacts in the list below, and the story goes out as a DM to them as well.
  6. Confirm with Share, or Send all if you ticked several destinations.

The story stays up for 24 hours and the list of viewers stays readable for 48. If your Instagram and Facebook accounts sit in the same Accounts Center, a Share to Facebook toggle appears here and can stay on for every story after this one. This destination screen only exists in the mobile app: from a browser, the story goes straight to all your followers with no in-between step.

Sending a story in a DM to specific people

The quietest of the six, and the handiest when you only want two or three people to see something.

A story you are watching: while it plays, tap the paper plane in the bottom right. Your conversation list opens with a search field. Tap Send next to each name or group. You can pick several in a row, and the story arrives in each chat as a tappable thumbnail.

Your own story: open it from your profile picture, then tap the three dots in the bottom right. The menu offers Send to, which opens that same contact list.

What the recipient gets is a thumbnail in the chat that opens the story full screen. The link dies with the story, so after 24 hours the thumbnail leads nowhere. Worth knowing if it is your story doing the rounds: a DM triggers no notification at all, unlike a reshare into someone’s story. It is the one official path that stays invisible.

Sharing a story outside Instagram: link and other apps

Here you leave the network. A story turns into a web address you can paste anywhere, or goes to another app through your phone’s share sheet.

The link: open the story, tap the three dots in the bottom right, then Copy link. You get an address along the lines of instagram.com/stories/username/id, ready to paste into a text, an email, a note, a WhatsApp message or a tweet. Whoever opens it watches the story in their browser, no Instagram account needed.

To another app: same three-dot menu, but pick Share to. Your system share sheet appears with WhatsApp, Telegram, Messenger, Messages, Mail, sometimes Slack or Notes depending on what is installed. What you send is still a link and not a video file, so nothing gets downloaded and the content vanishes when the story expires.

Two limits. The link does not outlive the story’s 24 hours unless you have added it to a highlight, which gives it a permanent address. And it only works on a public account: on a private one, the address you get shows an empty page to everyone but you.

Sharing someone else’s story

Since Instagram opened up resharing for public stories, a share icon shows up at the bottom of another account’s story. One tap drops you into the editor with the thumbnail and the author credit already attached, ready to post to your own story. If the author tagged you, the path runs through the DM you received and the Add to story button instead.

Three conditions apply: a public account, a resharing permission the author has left on, and the feature rolled out to your app. Without those, you are down to a screenshot plus an @ sticker pointing at the author.

This case has its own quirks, especially around what the author sees and what the archive allows. It is all covered in our guide on how to repost a story on Instagram.

Sharing a post to your story

A good share of story searches are really after this move: pushing a feed post into a story. The path is short and identical whether the post is yours or someone else’s.

  1. Under the post, tap the paper plane.
  2. Pick Add to story at the top of the share sheet.
  3. The thumbnail lands in the editor with the author’s handle tappable. Resize, add text, post.

On another account’s content the option only appears if the account is public and resharing is allowed in their settings. On your own post it is always there, and it is the fastest way to give a second run to something that went unnoticed. Put back in a story a few hours after it went live, a post often picks up a second wave of views, and the first Instagram likes weigh heavily on what the algorithm does with it next.

Sharing with close friends or a chosen list

Instagram gives you two ways to narrow a story’s audience, and they work in opposite directions.

Close friends is a positive list: only the people on it see the story. You build it in Settings and activity, under Story and live, then Close friends. Tick whoever you want among your followers, with no limit on numbers and no notification when someone is added or dropped. When you post, choose Close friends instead of Your story. Those stories show up with a green ring for the people who get them, and since 2026 the same list also covers posts and reels, marked with a green star.

Hide story and live from is a negative list: everyone sees it except the people you tick. Same place, Settings and activity, Story and live. The setting applies to all your future stories rather than just the next one, and it stays silent for the people left out.

Can you post a story that only one person can see? Not directly. Either you build a close friends list with only them in it, or you send them the content in a DM. And if your problem is reach rather than privacy, you are better off working on how far your posts travel with real Instagram followers.

Why sharing fails: the three blockers

When a button is missing or a link goes nowhere, it is almost always one of these three.

1. The share link only works for public accounts. A private account’s story has no public address: Copy link may still show up, but the address you get displays an empty page for the recipient, who has no right to see the content. Same for a close friends story, whose link only opens for people on the list. If a link has to travel, switch the account to public for the duration of the share, or take a screenshot.

2. Licensed music blocks external sharing. A track pulled from Instagram’s music library is licensed for playback inside the app and no further. On those stories the external share option disappears, or the recipient gets a silent file. Rights are territorial too, so the same story may be shareable from one country and not from another. For anything meant to leave Instagram, use a royalty free sound or your own audio.

3. Without a mention, another account cannot always reshare you. Public story resharing depends on a setting plenty of people have turned off and on a rollout that is still uneven. The one reliable trigger is the @ sticker: put it in your story and the person gets a DM with a button to add it to theirs. A handle typed out as plain text does not count, and the mention can be added after publishing through your story’s three-dot menu. The permission itself sits in your profile menu, under how others can interact with you, then Sharing and reuse.

FAQ

How do I share an Instagram story with just one person? DM
While the story is playing, tap the paper plane in the bottom right, search for the person and tap Send. The story arrives in your chat as a thumbnail. There is no way to post a story visible to a single recipient: the DM is the path built for that.
How do I share an Instagram story as a link? link
Open the story, tap the three dots in the bottom right, then Copy link. Paste the address into a text, an email or another app. The link only works if the account is public, and it stops working once the story expires after 24 hours.
Why can’t I share my story outside Instagram? blocked
Three likely causes. Your account is private, so no public address exists. The story uses a track from the music library, whose licence stops at the edge of the app. Or the story is set to close friends, and its link only opens for them.
Does the author know I shared their story? notification
It depends on the action. A reshare into your own story sends them a notification with your handle on it. A DM and a screenshot leave no trace at all. Copying the link sends nothing either, though the author still controls the setting that allows or blocks resharing.
How do I share a story with close friends only? close friends
Build the list first in Settings and activity, under Story and live, then Close friends. When you post, choose Close friends rather than Your story. Recipients see a green ring around your profile picture, and nobody is told when they are added to or removed from the list.
